Narrative therapy focuses on a collaborative approach between therapist and client, centering people as the expert of their own life narratives. Under this approach, the problem is viewed as something separate from the individual, couple or family and assumes people have the skills and abilities necessary to assist them in changing their relationship with the problems currently influencing their lives. The narrative approach functions under a broader context, considering the systemic influence and participation of diversity in each person including class, race, gender, sexual orientation and ability.
Experiential therapy centers on expressive tools and activities to support re-enactment and re-experiencing emotional situations from past and recent relationships. Activities include role-playing, acting, props, arts and crafts, music, guided imagery, and many more. Under this approach, the client remains focused on the activity and experience, beginning to explore emotions attached with some of the challenges creating discomfort presently. With the support of a therapist, these negative experiences and emotional responses can be released, processing through emotions that have been painfully blocked in relation to past experiences.
Solution Focused therapy emphasizes goal-setting as opposed to analyzing problems and pathology surrounding past events. Under this approach, the primary focus is identifying solutions in the present, building the individuals, couples, and/or families hope for the future in finding faster resolutions to present and future problems. Solution Focused therapy highlights the clients ability to know what is needed to improve their current life and through the utilization of coaching and questioning by the therapist, the best solutions to presenting challenges will emerge.
Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral therapy (TFCBT) focuses on individuals, couples and/or families who are struggling to overcome the impacts and effects of traumatic experiences.
